Dia de los Muertos celebrates life. Many refer to it as "The Day of the Dead" but DÃa de los Muertos has nothing to do with Halloween. The dates are close, the celebration occurs on November 1st and 2nd. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died.

The ritual is celebrated in Mexico and certain parts of the United States, including Arizona and California and is popular as well as among Mexicans throughout North America. It is an occasion for family and friends to visit graves, create altars and pray for loved ones who have died.

Mom Logic has a guide on how to celebrate here and they note in the report that Despite the holiday’s imagery, which is heavy on the cavorting skeletons and gape-mouthed skulls of people and animals, it’s not meant to be frightening.
Many people believe that during the Day of the Dead, it is easier for the souls of the departed to visit the living. Photos are here from the Arizona Republic.
