President Obama & Senator Scott Brown Related, Distant Cousins Claim Experts

Jan 29, 2010

Keep your friends close and your family closer? President Barack Obama was stung in that special election in Massachusetts apparently by his own cousin, newly elected Senator Scott Brown (pictured), experts in the field of genealogy have claimed.

Political pundits on both the left and the right declared the political fortunes of the president changed earlier this month when the Republican Brown upset Democrat Martha Coakley for the seat in the US Senate once held by Edward "Ted" Kennedy.

Kennedy had passed away in 2009 while still in office and the special election was scheduled so that the people of Massachusetts could vote for a new senator.

Brown won easily in what was dubbed a 'stunning upset' by the pundits and with that election result, the country was introduced to Scott Brown (and his family) and the president's agenda has been placed in limbo ever since.

Brown ran on the premise that he would be the 41st vote in the US Senate that could stop the Obama agenda (via filibuster as the democrats still hold a huge majority), specifically Brown said he would halt the president's plan to reform the US health care system.

Now it gets worse for the White House as ABC News reports that the experts claim the two are tenth cousins. Et tu, cuz?

More here from the network and the report cites the New England Historic Genealogical Society, who said: "Obama's mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, and Brown's mother, Judith Ann Rugg, both descend from Richard Singletary of Haverhill, Mass."

"I'm glad to be in such distinguished company," Brown mused when he heard the news.
