American Idol Gimmick: Why Not Just Bring Back Sanjaya Malakar?

Apr 26, 2007

American Idol must want viewers to quit the show. After a two hour show with guest performances galore and a promise of the most shocking American Idol finish ever, the producers decided to send no one home. Why not just bring back last week's eliminated contestant Sanjaya Malakar? His singing talent was questionable, but his gimmick of using his hair and his smile kept him alive on the show. Against the odds, Malakar, 17, made it to the top seven in the US competition.

American Idol 'Shocker': Why Not Just Bring Back Sanjaya Malakar?

Malakar, who Amercian Idol judge Simon Powell described as, "The smartest contestant we've ever had on the show" was on American Idol thanks to voting promoted by Howard stern and Vote for the Worst. After being dumped he grabbed the Letterman spotlight and mingled with people at the White House correspondents dinner. He's now a well know name and is a star thanks to American idol. But he was a gimmick, and I had hoped that when he was finally dumped that American Idol was big enough to skip any more gimmicks. I was wrong.

The much-awaited (and promoted) 'Idol Gives Back' results show aired on Wednesday and the show made good on their promises of celebrity guests and A-List performers. Millions of dollars were raised by sponsors to help needy children all over the world and viewers were invited to make donations via phone or through the show's website. That's very cool. I get that part. I applaud it.

But don't have me sit through a two hour episode that is supposed to end with an elimination and give me nothing. One avid idol viewer called it well. "'I hate this show. No one is going home. First, he waits until Jordin is in tears after Chris is told he's safe, then Ryan says, "We told you it was a shocker. Jordin, you're also safe. How could we send someone home on charity night?" So, next week, the bottom two goes home. I HATE the games this show plays. They just make us act like nuts."

The way Jordin was treated was pathetic, (maybe she knew already - I don't know) but if not one would hope she would get a few minutes in a room with Seacrest to wail on the host. This was a very poor choice by the producers and from a longtime idol watcher - I can tell you that I'm not pleased.

I like the show – I'm glad they are giving back. But skip the stunts American Idol – or I'm finished.
