Chris Matthews Defends His America-Bashing Statements

Nov 23, 2005

A Chris Matthewsspeech reported in the Edmonton Sun that many folks believed bashed Bush, America and the war effort generated quite a buzz once some of his outrageous quotes reached the states.

Matthews told the students, "The period between 9-11 and (invading) Iraq was not a good time for America. There wasn't a robust discussion of what we were doing," Matthews said.

"If we stop trying to figure out the other side, we've given up. The person on the other side is not evil. They just have a different perspective."

He also slammed President Bush, and blamed our relationship with Isreal for the Iraq invasion. (Story here)

I believed Matthews was talking about political domestic squabbleson his 'the other side is not evil' statementbut the MSNBC Hardball host informed me that I was wrong.

He actually believes those that are on the sides of the terrorists only have "a different perspective," and we need to make the effort to understand them.

In an e-mail exchange Mr. Matthews asked TNL to make certain this disclaimer was issued for our readers:

Matthews explains his statements

"In addressing the political science students at the University of Toronto, I told them the best way to deal with terrorists is the way Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir handled the killers of her athletes at the Olympics: track them down one by one and kill them. Matthews wrote.

"I said we should follow the same practice with terrorists and I wouldn't mind if we were rough about it. I said that he larger problem we're facing from the East needs to be understood and that we have do that if we're going to really deal with the problem we're facing - But I also think we need to do more than hate our enemy; we need to know what drives him. I want your readers to hear (that)."

So now you have.

I'll admit I rarely watch Matthews MSNBC show, but on Wednesday heard him again repeat the same drivel - nearly word for word.

The psychobabble of couch time for us to get deep into the minds the America haters in the Middle East combined with an attempt at tough talk by referencing Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir and the Munich terrorist attack is a clumsy defense, but apparently it's all Matthews has to give.

In fact, the oversimplification (especially of the Munich attacks) is insulting.

That may sell to the echo chamber of the left, but not here.
