David Letterman's off-screen life has reportedly inspired a Law & Order episode. Letterman unveiled an alleged $2 million extortion threat from Robert "Joe" Halderman when it was revealed Letterman was intimate with a news staffer Stephanie Birkitt, the girlfriend of Halderman and an intern and assistant at CBS on the Letterman show.

Law & Order executive producer Rene Balcer said: "We were already working on a blackmail story that's somewhat more violent. And who knows? This one may add a spin to the story we're working on."


The episode is rumoured to centre around a well-known celebrity talk-show host, who, like Letterman, is a married father.

The host in the storyline has had a series of short-lived affairs with some of the employees on the show and up until now has managed to keep them off the radar.

Robert "Joe" Halderman, the newsman accused of the Letterman extortion attempt, pleaded not guilty in court last month.
