A DJ in Britain played a request from a motorist stuck in traffic for Van Halen's hit song from the 1980s 'Jump' as a suicidal woman was threatening to plunge from a bridge to her end. Some are now furious with the man.
According to a report from the NY Daily News the disc jockey is identified as Steve Penk. He has his own morning show on Revolution Radio and "he played the song at the request of a commuter sitting in traffic on a highway shut down while police negotiators tried to talk the woman off the bridge."
Guess what - she jumped!
Police negotiators were furiously working to talk the woman down from the ledge of the highway bridge, but they failed and "the 30-year-old woman eventually jumped, sustaining only minor injuries in shattering her heel bones," Manchester police said.
Should the DJ be criticized?
He is refusing to apologize and can't understand why he is getting news coverage for his act. One man said the DJ showed "a complete lack of compassion and sensitivity," but police say the woman obviously couldn't have heard the song, so it would not have caused her to jump.
