Actress Emma Stone has joined the cast of the new Spiderman movie but will not play Mary Jane.

Emma Stone Joins Spiderman as as Gwen Stacy.

It was recently rumored the Stone, 21, who is starring in new flick Easy A, would be taking on the role of Kirsten Dunst's former character Mary Jane Watson in the new film.

However Columbia Pictures has now confirmed she is starring in the movie, but she will play Peter Parker's first love interest Gwen Stacy.


Matt Tolmach, Columbia Pictures President, said: "It's been an incredible journey for us to watch Emma's star rise as an actress."

"She is extraordinarily talented and has a very special onscreen spark that is perfect for this role."

"Given her history with the studio, casting her in one of our most important franchises is a real thrill."
