Emmy Snubs and Surprises for 2009 - Farrah Fawcett Nominated

Jul 17, 2009

Desperate Housewives may have been subbed with only two nominations but one time Charlie's Angels star, the late Farrah Fawcett, was a surprise and has been nominated for an Emmy for her cancer documentary. Fawcett's death at the age of 62 from anal cancer pulled heartstrings around the world.

"I know that she would be so, so happy. This was so important to her this project," said Alana Stewart, her best friend and companion in her final hours. Farrah's Story, a 90-minute documentary, aired on NBC six weeks before she died on June 25. "She's been nominated before and I just know that this would be the most important one of all," Stewart said.

Fawcett became the unlikely spokeswoman for women who develop the rare cancer and for patients everywhere. She especially advocated for those seeking experimental treatments in the US. "I think people will remember that beautiful young vibrant girl who captured the world's imagination, and then right through to the end - her final fight, which was such an amazing courageous battle," Stewart said.

The documentary has been nominated in the non-fiction special category. "It's very bittersweet. Farrah passed away three weeks ago today," Stewart said. Stewart and Ryan O'Neal, the late actor's partner, helped Fawcett make the documentary. A sequel is said to be in the pipeline.
