Famous Hoaxes and Lies (Video) Kate Middleton's Nurse, Manti Te'o Girlfriend
Famous Hoaxes and Lies - The hospital where Kate Middleton's nurse was working was fooled into believing that a hoax call regarding the duchess's medical state from Australian radio DJs was from Prince William's grandmother Queen Elizabeth and his father Prince Charles.
The nurse in that hoax call, Jacintha Saldanha was embarrassed about falling for the prank call and later killed herself.
Mel Greig and Michael Christian, the DJs behind the hoax, first bragged about the gag on the air, then changed their tone when the nurse wound up dead.
They were under heavy fire from critics who said their hoax led to the nurse's suicide, and later received counseling to help them cope with the severe backlash over the nurse's death.
Another famous hoax has played out in the US, Notre Dame football player Manti Te'o was reportedly fooled by a friend who set up a fake girlfriend online.
He talked about her in interviews for some time - and her name was made up, too - "Lennay Kekua" was the name of fake girlfriend.
On September 11, 2012, Te'o said that he suffered the loss of both his grandmother and girlfriend within the span of one day.
Te'o told many media outlets that his girlfriend, (fake Stanford student Lennay Kekua), endured a car accident and died after battling leukemia and the linebacker played through his grief, Te'o did not miss any football games for Notre Dame, saying that he had promised Kekua that he would play even if something had happened to her.
Again - she is a hoax, but Te'o says he is not sure of that just yet and continued the "story."
His story is that he never met her or even saw her while chatting online.
He has only texted her and sent e-mails and spoken with her on the phone.
Busted…
After receiving an anonymous email tip on January 11, 2013, reporters Timothy Burke and Jack Dickey of the sports blog Deadspin conducted an investigation into the identity of Kekua.
On January 16, they published an article that said they found no record of a woman named Lennay Kekua and that the story of her death was a hoax.
According to the report, the pictures published in the media supposedly of Kekua were actually taken of a friend of Ronaiah Tuiasosopo who is supposedly a "friend" and the alleged mastermind behind the hoax.
Manti Te'o has now sits down with Katie Couric - his interview is on video below for more on his wild hoax.
