Gabourey Sidibe: Model for Bazaar - Enemy of Yoga
Jan 10, 2010
'Precious' star Gabourey Sidibe (pictured) says she feels like a model after a photo shoot for Bazaar but adds in the interview that she detests yoga so much that if it were a person she would have to hurt it. She joked in the interview, "I hate yoga so much. Like, if yoga was a person, I'd stab them."
She did enjoy some empowerment with her photo shoot for the magazine. According to a report from The Huffington Post, on posing for Bazaar, the rising star added, "I feel like a model. It justifies everyone in my life who told me I wouldn't be anything until I lost weight."
Earlier Sidibe revealed she was upset that some critics have focused on the fact that she plays an "overweight black girl" in Precious. Hollywood insiders reportedly think Sidibe will be nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of an illiterate teenager who is beaten and sexually abused by both her parents and has two children by her father.
However, the 26-year-old New Yorker – and Golden Globe nominee – doesn't want audiences to focus on her character's race and size.
She said: "Look, I am black. I'm also overweight, but that's not the point of the story. The point is the abuse and her bravery. This stuff happens to skinny people, to white people, to so many different people that they've missed the point if they [the critics] say it's about a fat girl."
Despite the focus on her weight, Sidibe revealed that she is happy with her plus-size figure and is glad that she didn’t succumb to pressure to lose weight. She said: "It justifies that little girl who cried because she didn't think she could be in front of the camera.
"And it's for other girls who feel like they can't do this or that and feel like they're not pretty and not worthy of having their photo taken."
