Greatest American Dog: Hot Dogs Hit Reality TV
By Cyndi James
Jul 9, 2008
Reality TV has always been a bit of a dog-eat-dog world and on CBS' newest reality competition, there will be more scratching and clawing than ever before, as the dogs are real. Greatest American Dog will feature 12 dog owners and their canine companions, tossed together in a house Real World-style, while competing in a variety of challenges for the coveted title and a $250,000 grand prize.

According to a report from Star Magazine, in this competition, every dog - and owner - has his day. "It wasn't about physical excellence or who can sit and heel on cue, as in a more traditional dog show," judge and Dog Fancy editor Allan Reznik tells Star. "It's a series of creative exercises that display not a master and slave but a respectful and loving relationship."

"We wanted people who weren't bashful about looking goofy," says Allan. And they found them! One challenge features owners and dogs dressing in costumes and performing musical numbers; in another, the dogs play musical chairs. And each week, one bad dog and master are eliminated.
The Star report notes that as Allan explains, it's usually the person who's more to blame for a poor performance. With a quarter-million dollars on the line, people become high-strung - and that stress travels down the least to the dog."

And no matter what your favorite breed, there's a pooch for everyone to root for, from brindle boxer Presley to tiny Pomeranian Preston. "At the end of the day, who doesn't love a dog? Dogs are wonderful," says Allan. "And that's a really good message to send out to the audience."
