The weekend box office was not kind to the fabulous Katie Holmes. While the monster thriller Cloverfield exploded with a strong number one finish and the Katherine Heigl film 27 Dresses fared well in second place (both were new releases) Katie's film Mad Money didn't bring in the bucks at all as moviegoers took a pass, at least according to the early estimates from Box Office Mojo.
Us Weekly magazine reports that the comedy co-starring Queen Latifah and Diane Keaton, came in a distant fifth with only $2.3 million on Friday night, according to preliminary estimates. The magazine notes that the Jack Nicholson comedy The Bucket List ranked No. 3 with $4.2 million, while the indie comedy Juno (starring Ellen Page, who just signed on for Drew Barrymore's directorial debut) came in at No. 4 with $3 million. All of the box office numbers are estimates from Friday night.
UsMagazine.com notes that several film critics had slammed Holmes for her role. The New York Times called her “the movie’s weakest link." Holmes, who seems to have changed a lot since her early days based on her talk show appearances this week, also recently got blasted for some questionable style moves in New York City.
Her husband Tom Cruise faced his own criticism for a series of newly surfaced videos that were leaked out on the World Wide Web earlier this week.
