Reports have been all over the map for the rock star couple. some say that they are fighting a lot and Angelina is reportedly depressed, even when they were vacationing in the French countryside and insiders have told various weeklies that Brad is just about fed up. So what keeps this couple from just calling it quits? Perhaps it is their commitment to the four kids.

That's a pretty good reason. Jolie has said that she and Pitt are legally bound to their children (four so far) but haven’t committed to a legal union because both failed at marriage before. Uh-oh. It is a cleaner break without the courts - just ask Britney and K-Fed.

Their differences have become difficult to overlook, sources close to the couple say. "Angie says Brad worked out great as a father for her kids, but she also says they just aren't a good match," says a friend of hers. "Ultimately they want different lives." Who would have think it?

A report from Life & Style Weekly cites a friend of Brad: "Brad lives for his children, but he wants a more normal life than Angie's willing to give him," says the pal. And while he's long put up with Angie's volatile behavior, Brad's started pushing back. "Brad is not someone to lie down and let Angelina walk all over him," home-town acquaintance Joseph Nicholas Diacossavas tells Life & Style. "Brad's bigger than that."

The report claims that in fact, insiders say one of the main reasons Brad and Angie are still together is a mutual desire to do what's best for the kids. But that might not be the right call. "If there's constant fighting without resolution, it's not healthy for children to live like that," says psychologist Ruth A. Peters, who does not treat the family. "In that case maybe they should split."

The report also claims that little Maddox is taking it rough. "The fighting really upsets him," says an insider close to the Pitt family. "It often makes him cry – and he ends up begging his parents to stop fighting. Brad has taken Maddox aside and told him it's natural for people to argue and that Mommy and daddy still love each other. But Maddox is a smart kid and he knows something's wrong."
