Actress Kirstie Alley has hit out at those who support Roman Polanski after his recent arrest. Alley, 58, who is best known for her role in TV show Cheers, took to her Twitter page to condemn the director who is being held in Switzerland after he was arrested on charges of unlawful sex with a minor 31 years ago.

Alley posted messages on her Twitter page, saying: "JUST FOR THE RECORD... RAPE IS RAPE...this is one HOLLYWOOD STAR who does not CELEBRATE or DEFEND Roman Polanski... his ART did not RAPE her." Another message said: "THERE is NO SUCH THING AS CONSENSUAL SEX with a 13 year old girl..it is RAPE and Polanski is a Coward. HE made 2 bad choices RAPE and FLEE."


Earlier it was reported film heavyweights Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen, David Lynch, Jonathan Demme and Pedro Almodovar are said to be calling for the release of Roman Polanski from a Swiss jail. The group is said to be signing a petition demanding Polanski be freed from a Zurich jail that locked him up on a 1978 US arrest warrant for unlawful sex with a minor. Experts, meanwhile, said Polanski faced months in jail due to Swiss law. He has hired a top criminal lawyer in Switzerland who filed a request in court for his release.

A former Los Angeles prosecutor with extensive experience of extradition, Peter Cosandey, said: "We are talking about three, four months easily. If he's not released on bail as requested by his lawyers, then he has to remain in prison." Film director Luc Besson said: "This is a man who I love a lot and know a little bit. Our daughters are good friends. But there is one justice, and that should be the same for everyone. I will let justice happen. I don’t have any opinion on this, but I have a daughter, 13 years old. And if she was violated, nothing would be the same, even 30 years later."
