Movie News - Oscar for Matthew McConaughey for Wolf of Wall Street Role?
Movie news – should Matthew McConaughey when an Oscar for his brief role in the Wolf of Wall Street? Some believe he was so good in his time on screen that he should when an Academy Award.
The producers of 'Wolf of Wall Street' feel McConaughey deserves an Oscar nomination for his short role.
The 44-year-old actor - who has enjoyed a career renaissance over the last year in a string of critically acclaimed roles - has a brief but memorable appearance at the beginning of Martin Scorsese's new dark comedy and producers Riza Aziz and Joey McFarland were so blown away by his performance they feel he should get an Academy Awards nod.
Aziz enthused to BANG Showbiz: ''If you could have a Best Supporting Actor nomination for a five-minute scene, he would definitely have to be a shoe-in for that.''
McFarland added: ''Martin Scorsese and Ellen Lewis, our casting director, one of their strongest points is bringing the right actors to the roles. Matthew's had an amazing year with 'Mud', 'Dallas Buyers Club' and now 'Wolf of Wall Street' ... he was the perfect fit. What he did for the Mark Hanna role was larger than life and more than anyone expected.''
'The Wolf of Wall Street', which is based on the real-life story of stockbroker Jordan Belfort, has been criticised for glamorising drugs, alcohol, sex and prostitutes, but the Red Granite Pictures founders insist this isn't the film's intention.
Speaking at the UK premiere of 'The Wolf of Wall Street' in London's Leicester Square on Thursday (09.01.14), Aziz said: ''It was never our intention to do that, to glorify it or make it look like a good world, because it wasn't. But what Scorsese would always tell us is that if you are authentic and true to the character and the world, people will [understand that]. But if you start to sugar-coat that world and all its ugliness then that's when you glorify things.''
Meanwhile, McFarland says the only glorification is the film's epic reunion of star Leonardo DiCaprio and director Martin Scorsese.
He claimed: ''I think the only glorifying that we did was the fact that Leonardo DiCaprio is playing Jordan Belfort and Martin Scorsese is directing. There's nothing glamorous about being addicted to drugs, alcohol, greed, power and sex. When Leo's playing the part, I guess that's where the glamour lies.''
Aziz and McFarland were joined at the premiere by 'Wolf of Wall Street' stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill and Margot Robbie.
