Michael Douglas and Blame Game for Son Cameron's Jail Sentence

May 4, 2010

Celebrity Court Watch - Michael Douglas (pictured with his son Cameron) says he takes blame for "being a bad father" and has insisted he is thrilled his drug addict son is in jail, saying: "He was going to be dead or somebody was gonna kill him."

The Wall Street star, speaking for the first time since Cameron was jailed for five years on drug charges, insists prison is a blessing in disguise.

The Hollywood actor insists his 31-year-old son is already the cleanest he has been since he was 13 - and believes getting caught dealing saved his life.

“Look, my son was a drug dealer, and he’s been trying to kill himself for a while," Douglas admitted on US TV's The Today Show. "I can’t condone his behavior. I think the court recognized his drug addiction as well as the crime that he committed and it's an adequate, I think, amount of time for anybody to spend in jail.

"And the best part of it is, he will be able to start his life afresh." He says that Cameron is already on the path to making the right changes.

"My son has not been sober for this length of time since he was 13 years old," Douglas, 65, admitted. "He was going to be dead or somebody was gonna kill him. I think he has a chance to start a new life, and he knows that."
