Oprah Winfrey broke down as she told viewers the 'real reason' she was ending her chat show. The daytime TV queen explained that she knew when it was time to say goodbye and felt that 25 years was the ‘perfect time’ to quit the show. Oprah failed to keep her composure as she announced she would leave TV screens in 2011 and told her fans that they had ‘enriched’ her life.

"I love this show, this show has been my life and I love it enough to know when it’s time to say goodbye," she said. "Twenty-five years feels right in my bones and it feels right with my spirit. It’s the perfect number, the exact right time. So I hope that you will take this 18-month ride with me right through to the final show."

Oprah, who began her chat show in 1986 and has interviewed a wide array of high-profile celebrities, had tears in her eyes as she made her announcement.


Wearing a long-sleeved grey dress, the talk show host stood as she addressed the camera in a pre-recorded message for her show. "After much prayer and months of careful thought, I’ve decided that next season – season 25 – will be the last season of the Oprah Winfrey show," she revealed.

"Over the next couple of days you may hear a lot of speculation in the press about why I am making this decision now and that will mostly be conjecture, so I wanted you to hear this directly from me."

The TV star explained that she had been ‘beyond excited’ when she launched the first Oprah Winfrey Show on September 8, 1986, and paid tribute to her loyal viewers. The Oprah Winfrey show is set to end in September 2011.
