Patrick Dempsey (pictured) will be swapping hospital patients for alien robots after it was announced the actor would taking time from his hit show Grey’s Anatomy to join the cast of Transformers 3.

Dempsey is set to play Megan Fox’s character’s boss in the movie, a role that will be “significant to the plot”, a Paramount Pictures spokesperson told E Online.


Also signing on for the third installment are John Malkovich and Frances McDormand.

The project, which will be filmed in the US, Africa, Russia and China, with director Michael Bay once again taking the helm, will reportedly begin production this month.
