Paul Heyman Comments on Brock Lesnar's UFC Debut
Feb 5, 2008
Paul Heyman, who gave Brock Lesnar the tag "The Next Big Thing" while performing as the bruising NCAA Champion's on-air "agent" and "manager" in World Wrestling Entertainment, has commented on Lesnar's loss this past Saturday night to Frank Mir at UFC 81: Breaking Point pay per view.
Heyman, who is launching Heyman Hustle.com in partnership with the UK SUN on February 18th, told the SUN's MMA reporter Mark Gilbert, "I loved the Lesnar and Mir fight. That was an awesome, exciting, crowd-heating spectacle. That's exactly what you want when you buy a UFC pay-per-view. Brock was great. Explosive, powerful, and his punches were violent and delivered with malicious intent."
Heyman continued, "I'm surprised there's not been more controversy over Mazzagatti's call to stop the fight because of the inadvertent punch to the back of the head. But there's no escaping what happened, and from my vantage point, the result would have been the same. Mir was ready for him...period."
But the man who revolutionized pro wrestling with his "Extreme" concepts (Heyman was the owner and creative mind behind the original Extreme Championship Wrestling --ECW-- promotion from 1993 to 2001) had nothing but praise for Lesnar. "It was as good a 90 seconds as I have ever seen in the UFC," Heyman noted, "Brock showed he was for real, there was no denying it. He came in and had everyone believing he was going to beat a savvy, veteran cage fighter. How many believed Lesnar would win? And how close did he come to doing it? And he was script perfect with his post-fight speech. He proved not to be a pro-wrestler and showed himself to be a competitor and a sportsman."
Heyman had, surprise surprise, an interesting perspective on both Lesnar and Mir's futures in UFC. "The novelty would be off if he'd have won his first fight," Heyman stated, "But since he lost, the story for the next fight will be Brock's drive and determination to erase this loss from people's minds. From a human interest story perspective, Mir is in a great position to go after the title now. He was as good as Brock in the pre-fight promos – especially the line where he talked about ripping the skin off Brock's face and crushing his lungs – and he was superb in his post-fight press conference too."
Heyman has teamed with famed New York City Hi-Def pioneer Mitchell Stuart to produce the "Heyman Hustle" series for wireless/broadband and digital/mobile platforms. To see a special sneak preview of the Hustle entertainment series, click here.
