Phillip is set to undergo surgery before Idol's summer tour kicks off July 6 in Detroit, Michigan.

Phillip Phillips barely staved off emergency surgery for an American idol win last night (5-23-2012) and will be going under the knife very soon to help correct a kidney issue.

According to the USA Today, the newly crowned signer called in to the Live! With Kelly show and told Kelly Ripa he could not make her show next week as he is still ailing and unable to make the New York trip.

Phillips was hospitalized at one point early in the season, and has been battling kidney problems.

He added, "It's been tough. I've had a lot of great people around me, great doctors. That helps out a lot."

Us Weekly has revealed that Phillip is set to undergo surgery to alleviate recent health issues before Idol's summer tour kicks off July 6 in Detroit, Michigan.

USA Today reveals When Ripa asked him about upcoming surgery, he wasn't specific about what or when exactly he'd be having it, but said, "Yes, I'll be having it here soon. I'm getting prepared for all that. I'm ready to feel better, feel like myself."

On the show last night, Phillip defeated Jessica Sanchez and was crowned the winner of American idol 2012, a feat that seems even more remarkable now that it was revealed how sick he was during the show.
