Reese Witherspoon surpassed Julia Roberts earlier this year as the highest paid actress in Hollywood, commanding $29 million a movie. Her husband Ryan Phillippe - who she just separated fromthis week -makes roughly $2.5 million a film.

So how much can Reese lose? First she loses her husband of seven years and there are two kids involved. But with these kinds of assets folks are always going to look at the dollar signs. Under California law, without a prenup, earnings during a marriage are divided up 50/50.

The financial consequences are enormous. Witherspoon now commands $20 million a movie. In 2005, Witherspoon raked in a total of $30 million for two movies, "Just Like Heaven" and "Walk the Line."

Obviously that makes her the big-time bread winner of the family and the couple didn’t sign a prenuptial agreement when they wed in 1999, according to TMZ. Is this a Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey issue?

Perhaps. But again - there are kids involved in this marriage. And the couple seem to realize that as sources close to the couple say they are determined to keep the split amicable, for the sake of their two children - Ava, 7, and Deacon, 3.
