Movie News - Tobey Maguire has been cut from 'Life of Pi'.

'The Great Gatsby' actor had a small role in the film as a writer who interviews the main character, but has been cut from the final edit by director Ang Lee, as he was too recognisable among the relatively unknown cast.

Tobey said there were no hard feelings, telling The Hollywood Reporter: ''I fully support Ang's decision to go a different direction for this role in 'Life of Pi'.

''Ang shared a lot of the film with me, and what I saw was absolutely beautiful.''

Ang added: ''To be consistent with the other casting choices made for the film, I decided to go with an entirely international cast. I very much admire Tobey and look forward to working with him again in the future.''

Rafe Spall, who recently appeared in Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus', has now taken the part originally played by Tobey.

'Life of Pi' is a story about a teenage boy who is the only survivor of a shipwreck, and is accompanied in his lifeboat by an orangutan, hyena, a wounded zebra, and a Bengal tiger.

Based on the novel written by Yann Martel, it is expected to be a contender for major awards. The film is released from November 21 in the US and December in Europe.
