Todd Herzog Wins Survivor, Scandal Brewing Over 50K and Denise Martin

Dec 18, 2007

Let the scandals begin. Todd Herzog has captured the crown on Survivor china but that now has given way to a possible scandal involving the Lunch Lady. According to Entertainment Weekly "lunch lady" contestant Denise Martin, lied on Sunday's live broadcast when she stated that she was not given her job back as a cafeteria worker upon her return from taping the reality show.

She was given a pretty nifty consolation prize of $50,000 when she told the audience that she was made to "clean the toilets" as a janitor working night shifts. She came in fourth on the reality TV show but the show kicked her the $50K to help her get her life on track.

But the school where she works says the story is bunk. According to TMZ.Com Douglas, Mass. School Superintendent Nancy T. Lane said in a statement that Denise Martin actually got promoted from "cafeteria employee" to "custodian" -- at a higher salary and with better benefits before she appeared on "Survivor." Lane says, "I watched my own jaw drop when [Martin] said that, because it's absolutely not true."

Herzog "lied and schemed" his way to the title and now it appears he may not have been the only one working hard to mislead. Herzog beat out 26-year-old waitress Courtney Yates and 23-year-old hiking guide Amanda Kimmel for the $1 million prize. "I wasn't the strongest. I wasn't the smartest. But I was definitely the most strategic," Herzog says of his win.
