Many took the news hard. "We are all in a state of shock," Seiler said in a news release issued by the university. "We had no warning whatsoever." UGA II served the Bulldog nation for just over a year.

The 56-pound dog was "known as a laid-back mascot who seemed oblivious to crowd noise." SI.Com notes in a report that the school said there would be no mascot at Saturday's game in Athens against Kentucky.

UGA President Michael Adams also offered condolences. "Our hearts go out to the Seilers and the entire Bulldog Nation at this unexpected loss," Adams said in a news release. "Uga VII was both a family pet and a symbol for millions of fans, and besides that he was just a sweet dog. We will miss him."
