The bandwidth is still hanging in the air from e-mail break up, but many fans are wondering if Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson's split leads to a divorce - just how much it will cost the blonde star.And while some fans are holding on with sincere hopes of reconciliation between Jessica and Nick, many are wondering - will Nick ask for alimony support checks?

Jess may wave good-bye to a lot of cash

In the three years since they were married, the pair has amassed a good size fortune and Simpson has reportedly been the principal bread winner.

Reports say that Jess pulled down at least $35 million just last year (2004). California will divide up the couple's assets and everything earned during the marriage is split down the middle 50/50.

But Nick could actually seek spousal support for 18 months, half of the length of the marriage. It's not clear exactly how much the checks would be for that Simpson would have to write each month, if Nick goes that route.

A report in Us Weekly says that Jess isn't worried about cash.

"Jessica will be the first to admit that her fame wouldn't have come without Nick, dishes a Jess insider to the tabloid.

"She'll make more money."

That's true. Jessica's divorce will be a personal tragedy, but will likely increase her earning potential as an actress and celebrity.

Kind of sad and cruel - but true.
